My friend and I were traveling up north to San Pedro de Atacama. We were on a smelly, 12-hour bus ride, with a bunch of whiny, snot-nosed, ugly kids. I like kids. I don’t mind if they are whiny and snot-nosed, but these kids were horrible, and on top of that they were ugly. It was miserable, and no one could sleep. The guy in the seat next to us made the executive decision that the whole 50 person bus would sleep better if he played Bob Marley on his cell phone.

I like to sleep to the sound of silence, and I am not referring to the Simon & Garfunkel song. I do not like Bob Marley when I am trying to fall asleep, but that probably has the most to do with the fact that I just do not like Bob Marley.

Anyway, I politely requested that the dude stop torturing us and put his fucking headphones in. He got all embarrassed and just put his phone away. What the fuck? Did he think that no one had noticed he was playing the music before I said anything? Did he think they were enjoying it?

Why do Chileans do this? And what makes them think it is okay? Almost as a rule, the cell-phone-music-playing Chileans never play good music, and never in appropriate situations.

I was at a party the other weekend, and two Chilean girls started talking about the cell phone music phenomenon. “Do you see old ladies doing it?” one asked, rhetorically. “No. You see hueones flaites with their fancy little cell phones trying to look all cool.” (“Hueones flaites” can be roughly translated as sketchy douchebags.)

I laughed pretty hard after overhearing the discussion, and resolved that cell-phone-music-playing-Chileans are the equivalent to crazies carrying around ghetto blasters. They are crazies. I cannot take them seriously.
